Lieut. Couch, who was a naval doctor assigned to duty with the Army, was the first Dalton man to be killed in the present hostilities.
He was connected with the 99th Artillery Battalion of the First Cavalry Division which was stationed in the Chunchon area near the 38th parallel. His parents last heard from him on Friday by a letter dated March 28.
Lieut. Couch lived in Dalton all his life and was a graduate of Dalton High School and Williston Academy in Easthampton. In 1945 he graduated from Yale University and then entered the Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons. He graduated from medical school in 1949 and served as an intern at Bellevue Hospital, New York.
During World War II, Lieut. Couch served in the Navy as a medical corpsman and received a commission in the Naval Reserve after his graduation from medical school. He married Miss Virginia Blum of Hightstown, N.J. last November and was called back to active duty shortly afterward. He sailed for Japan early in January where he remained for three days before being sent to Korea as a battalion surgeon.
Besides his wife and parents, Lieut. Couch leaves three brothers, Franklin L. Jr. of Abington, Md., Nathan P., a first-year student at Harvard Medical School, and Robert, a freshman at Yale University. His maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Reuben C. Pierce of Dalton.
