Springfield police motorcycle patrolman Paul F. Mawaka, 34, of 347 Shaker Rd., Westfield, died Tuesday night in a hit and run accident while on duty.

Police received a phone call which indicated that the officer had been struck after falling from his motorcycle. Officers said the motorcycle lay 100 to 150 feet from where the skidmarks started on the opposite side of the street. Police said the accident occurred in almost the exact same spot at which another Springfield patrolman, Richard D. Vigneault, was killed while riding in a cruiser last April.

Mawaka was born in Springfield, May 25, 1939, and lived here most of his life. He was formerly of 140 Bristol St., Springfield, moving to Westfield a short time ago.

A nine-year veteran of the police force, he had been assigned to the traffic bureau for the past three years. He was officially commended in 1969 for his work in solving a breaking and entering case.

He was a member of the Italian American Citizen's Club of Springfield, the Massachusetts Police Association, the Springfield Police Association and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, Local 571.

He leaves his wife, Claire A. (Albino) Mawaka; three daughters, Laura, Wendy and Kimberley; all at home; his mother, Mrs. Mary (Borecki) Mawaka; a brother, Philip F. Mawaka, and a sister, Mrs. Frank J. Nagle, all of Springfield.

The funeral with full Police Department honors will be Saturday morning at the T.P. Sampson Co.'s State Street funeral home with a liturgy of Christian burial in St. Michael's Cathedral and burial in St. Michael's Cemetery.

My Notes:

The son of Philip Mawaki (born in Poland) and Hattie Mary Borecki (born in Mass).

The husband of Claire Anna Albino who was born in Ludlow.
