Dorland E. 'Buz' Swan
Aug. 15, 1928 - Oct. 14, 2010

SALEM - Dorland E. 'Buz' Swan took advantage of a beautiful fall day and shuffled off his mortal coil at home on Oct. 14, 2010.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children and daughters-in-law, Kathy, Michael & Diane, Maureen, Kevin & Lynn, and Tim & Eun-young; his grandchildren, Ryan, Caitlin, Nick, and Hallie; his sister, Joyce Tillinghast; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dorland was born at home in The Dalles on Aug. 15, 1928, to Howard & Winafred Swan, and lived in Oregon most of his life. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1946 and almost immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. For an adventure, and the extra pay, he became a paratrooper, serving in the 11th Airborne Division, 674th Parachute Field Artillery. In the Pacific Theater, Dorland was a member of the Occupation forces in Japan, and received the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Good Conduct Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.

After returning from his military service, Dorland attended and graduated from Willamette University in Salem (1951), where he met his future wife, Carol Klecker (married Aug. 10, 1951).

Dorland was an avid backpacker who took yearly trips to the lakes of the Cascade Mountains with his father-in-law, Edmund Klecker; brothers-in-law, Bud Wedel and Lee, Rodney, and Jeff Klecker; and his children and grandchildren. He also insisted on doing annual family vacations with his wife and children (and the dog), piling them into campers and trailers and kiting off to Big Lake and various locations on the Oregon coast. Dorland was an ace water-skier who, in addition to skiing with amazing fluidity and skill, taught all five of his children to ski, as well as nieces, nephews and many friends of those children. He'd take on any challenge, and never failed to get a person up on skis. Boating gave great pleasure to Dorland and his entire family.

Dorland had a love for travel. He and Carol took cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Panama Canal, and also traveled to England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand. Dorland was a Model A enthusiast and he drove Carol all over in his 1930 Model A, touring extensively throughout Oregon with the Model A club, as well as visiting Banff National Park and Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada.

Dorland worked for the Oregon State Highway Department for more than 32 years, after having first dabbled in work as an ambulance driver/orderly/surgical assistant at Salem Deaconess Hospital. He also did a stint as an Oregon State Police motorcycle officer. Better known as Buz to his Highway Department colleagues, Dorland was a civil engineer, starting out pounding stakes and working his way to a senior position where his abilities as a manager inspired his employees. His dedication to public service was appreciated by all who knew him.

Dorland was active in a number of charitable and civic volunteer organizations. He was a volunteer firefighter during his time in Roseburg. He served on the boards of more than one credit union in Salem. Long active in the Salem Elks Lodge, Dorland also took responsibility for the Lodge college scholarship program year after year, dedicating hours to the applications and counseling of local high school students.

Dorland was a devoted, idealistic, methodical, unplanned-boat-buying, stubborn, loving man. He will be missed more than words can possibly express. Same to you, Daddy. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , the American Heart Association , or to a charity of one's choice. Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday Oct. 21, 2010, at First United Methodist Church of Salem, 600 State Street, Salem, Ore. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
