Mary immigrated to the U.S. in 1850.

She married fellow Irishman Lawrence Powers on 27 Nov 1856 in Erie Co., Ohio. The couple had nine children together--Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. (b.1859), Kate/Cattie (b.1862), John (b.1866), Lawrence J. (b.1869), Merlin (b.1871), Mary (b.1873), William "Willie" (b.1877), and two unidentified children who were born and died before 1900.

I couldn't find the family on the 1860 Census but a city directory for the city of Sandusky, Erie Co., Ohio, places Lawrence there that year, with a home on Reese St. and mason as his occupation. An 1867 city directory also gave Reese St. and stone cutter for Lawrence.

I did find the family on the 1870 Census, living in Sandusky. Though Lawrence's headstone has 1868 inscribed as his death year, Lawrence, aged 37, appeared alive and well on that 1870 Census, his occupation noted as a laborer. Mary, aged 32, was home with their four children--Lizzie, aged 11, Kate, aged 8, John, aged 4, and Lawrence, aged 2. Also living in the home were two roomers, both Irishmen--John Mercer, aged 20 and a teamster, and Charles Murphy, aged 22, and a laborer.

The family was sill living in Sandusky when the 1880 Census was done. Lawrence, aged 50, and apparently still alive, was still doing masonry work. Mary, aged 40, was keeping house. Still home with her were Cattie, aged 16, John, aged 14, Lawrence, aged 12, Merlin, aged 9, Mary, aged 7, and Willie, aged 3.

Daughter Lizzie was out on her own, working as a domestic servant. She married Christopher H. Thiel on 16 Nov 1885 in Erie County.

Though I am not sure when Lawrence died, it was sometime before 1900. On that year's census, Mary appeared without him, widowed, aged 61, and living in Huron, Erie County with son Lawrence Jr., aged 31, and Lawrence's wife Jennie E. (nee Walker), whom he had just married on 25 Apr 1900 in Erie County. He indicated that he was farming for a living. Also living in the home was 7-year-old George Brady, his relationship to the others not noted. For some reason, Mary reported that she had only had one child that census year, which was clearly not the case.

Mary, aged 70, was still with son Lawrence and his family when the 1910 Census was enumerated. She reported that she had nine children, but that only seven had survived to that census. The family was still living in Huron, Erie County, where Lawrence, aged 41, was busy with the farm. Jennie, aged 37, reported that she had had six children, and that all had survived to that census. Home with her were Florence C., aged 9, John W., aged 7, Mary A., aged 6, Marguerite, aged 5, Helen, aged 3, and Esther, aged 7 months.

Six years after that census, Mary died in 1916 at age 76, and was laid to rest next to husband Lawrence.
