Moses Cox was born in England, possibly in Romsey, Hampshire, about 1595. His parents are unknown. He came to america and settled first in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he was a planter. Moses removed to Hampton, Rockingham, New hampshire about 1638. Margaret, wife of John Stubbin of Watertown, Mass. testified 19 (7) 1640, to purchasing of him "tried suet about the month of October last was twelve month, when he was going from Ipswich to live at Hampton first." He was a proprietor, herdsman, and selectman in Hampton. He took the Oath of Allegence at Hampton on December 4, 1678.

Moses’ first wife was named Alice, last name unknown, but possibly Wise. She died with seven others, including her son John, when the boat they were in was capsized just outside the harbor at Hampton. they were on the way to Boston. Moses later married, June 16, 1658, Prudence Marston Swaine, she may have been the widow of one of the other victims. She was the daughter of William Marston. His known children, with both wives, are: John, Mary, Sarah, Rachel, Moses b. 2 (9) 1649, Leah b. 21 or 25 (2) 1661, (m. James Perkins). Moses died at Hampton on May 28, 1687, in his 93rd year. His will was dated November 1, 1682, and probated on July 18, 1687. It was noted that he was "very aged". He mentioned his wife Prudence, son in law James Perkins and daughter Leah. He also mentioned daughters Mary Godfree, Sarah Norris and Rachel Rawlings. The inventory of his estate was taken on July 18, 1687.

“A boate going out of Hampton River was cast away and the psons all drowned who were in number eight: Em. Hilliar, Jon. Philbrick and An Philbrick his wife; Sarah Philbrick there daughter; Alice the wyfe of Moses Cox, and john Cox his sonne, Robert Read; who perished in ye sea ye 20th of the 8 mo. 1657” Norfolk County Records.
