Nolan Eugene "Gene" Raney, San Marcos, Texas, was born March 12, 1932, in Wright County, Mo., to Ezra and Dorothy (Ussery) Raney and passed away Jan. 8, 2013.

Gene attended a one room school in Wright Co, MO for 8 years with perfect attendance.He graduated May 1950 from Mountain Grove High School.

After graduating from high school, Gene worked for two years before joining the Air Force in March, 1952. He went through basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Afterwards he trained as a plumber at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He was stationed in Omaha, Nebraska, before shipping out to Korea. He was actually at sea when the peace treaty was signed. Once in Korea, he was attached to the army and ran a Korean-manned laundry on base.

When he returned to the States, he was sent to Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas, where he was attached to the Installation Squadron. He remained there in the Air Force until he was discharged in 1956.

In 1955, two of his buddies were dating college girls from Texas State University, San Marcos, and they introduced him to his future wife, Mary Patricia Bird, who was graduating in May. They continued dating that summer and married August 20, 1955, in Gonzales, Texas, her hometown. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage.

Gene also attended Texas State University, San Marcos, and earned bachelors and masters degrees. Upon graduation, he accepted an industrial arts teaching position in Tyler, Texas, in a new school where he ordered the equipment for his department. He set up new programs in all districts. He worked in Northeast ISD in San Antonio for 9 years as a teacher and six more years as an Assistant Principal., Principal in Bastrop ISD for 6 years, and Principal in Dripping Springs ISD for 8 years.

After retiring from public schools, he taught GED classes at Gary Job Corp for 6 years and helped 600 young men and women earn their GED. A stroke in 1995 ended his teaching career, but he enjoyed his retirement on seven acres of Hays County near San Marcos. He was active in the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon until his health began to fail him.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Billy and Eual Raney, and sister, Eula Whittaker.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia Raney; daughters, Mary (Greg) Mittal, Penny (Bobby) Crow, Carol (Mike) Scott; grandsons, Brennan, Christopher, Drew, Eric, Russell, Micah, Derek and Michael; two great grandchildren; and sisters, Wilma (Russel) Stewart, Phyllis Wade, Carmalee (David) Hall; sister-in-law, Rena Kuestersteffen; brother-in-law, Dale Whittaker; many nieces, nephews and friends.
