Born and raised on the Ashwell London Twp.
farm at Lot 31, Con. 4 (Gainsborough Rd. today).

On Feb. 10, 1864 in Wentworth County, ON
George Ashwell Jr. married Rachel Sharpe
(1843-1916) daughter of Allen Sharpe and
Rachel Shanklin also of London Twp. who lived
north of the village of Melrose.

George Ashwell was a merchant in the flour
and feed business at 76 Frank St. in
Strathroy and was also a grain buyer for
many years. He constructed "Ashwell Block"
at this location in 1880. The building is
still in use and the name is visible at the
They had 11 children:
(1) Ida Mary Ashwell (Jan.5-Oct.20,1865)

(2) Alice Viola "Allie" Ashwell
(Nov.23,1866-Mar.5,1935) married
Charles Wesley Woodhull (1861-1939).
They moved to Sanilac County, MI in 1899
and by 1910 were in Huron County there.
About 1918 they moved to Iowa and in
the 1920s moved to Glendale, CA. Both
are buried there.
They had six children.

(3) Rachael Ada Ashwell (Oct.14,1868-
Aug.6,1947) married Thomas Nairn Dunn
(1857-1925) who started the Strathroy
Canning and Preserving Factory in 1894.
They had no children of their own but
adopted a daughter.

(4) George William Ashwell
(Jan.11,1870-July 3, 1922) married
Margaret Kathleen "Maggie" Barry
(1875-1956). They lived for a short
time in Strathroy, BC and after in
London. They had nine children, the
last a stillborn.

(5) Elda Eva Ashwell (Sept.14,1872-
Feb.6,1936), a teacher, married
Archibald McIntyre (1870-1936). They
lived in Croswell, Sanilac County, MI
and both are buried there. They had
four children.

(6) Allen Sharpe Ashwell (May 29,1874-
Apr.16,1935) married Mabel Florence
Kinsman (1870-1946). Both died in
Victoria, BC. No known children.

(7) Annie Eliza Ashwell (June 6, 1876-
Jan. 29, 1951), a teacher and later
librarian, married Cecil Ethelbert Race
(1876-1927). They moved to Edmonton, AB
and both died there. They had two

(8) Frederick Dixon Ashwell (Mar.26,1878-
Mar.8,1900), a street car conductor in
Toronto, succumbed to injuries from an
accidental collision. Unmarried and
buried in Strathroy with parents.

(9) Charles Hamilton Ashwell (Feb.17,1880-
Sept.10,1948) married Maude Eliabeth Small
(1879-1983). They lived in MN and IA
before moving to southern CA where they
died. No children.

(10)Bertha Mabel Ashwell (Apr.12,1882-
Mar.14,1971) married Charles Stanley
Barker (1886-1969). They moved to
Edmonton, AB. They had three children.

(11)Lula Maude Ashwell (Aug.17,1883-
Jan.30,1967) married Fenwick Anson Tripp
(1886-1951). They lived in Kamloops, BC
for a time but moved to Highland Park,
MI in 1922. Lula died in Palo Alta, CA.
Both are buried in Strathroy. They had
two children.
