Matthew Thomas Clyde Stewart was born August 1, 1932 to the union of Sylvester and Gaynell Stewart along with 10 siblings. He graduated from Oak Dale elementary School and from Waite High School where he earned fame as a track and field star. However, his greatest interest started on Good Friday 1948 at the Mays chapel U. H. Church in Toledo where he accepted Jesus Christ into his life.

Matthew answered the call to his country by serving in the Medical Corp Division in the United Sates Army from September 4, 1952 thru September 3, 1954. Bravely he served on the front lines in the Korean Conflict thus earning a Purple Heart and a honorable discharge.

After his relocation to Chicago, Il, Matthew married Esther M. Johnson on June 27, 1955 who preceded him in death on March 9, 1999. From that union was born one son, Timothy A. Stewart and one daughter Ruth G. Bradfield.

Matthew pursued higher education at the Roosevelt University at the Chicago Conservatory of Music for the tuning of his music gifting. He also attended the Chicago State University where he earned a Masters of Art Degree in English and a Masters of Science Degree in special Education. In quest of additional spiritual enlightening, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Northern Baptist theological Seminary. Matthew enjoyed other interests such as choir directing, opera, concerts, plays, self defense techniques, new and different exercises and the collecting of cooking receipts. However, he seriously gave himself over to Christian Education Teaching and as pianist, organist for various churches in Chicago until he was diagnosed with a rare cancer in May 1999. This caused his retirement from the Gary School Corp. where he was employed for 31 years from 1968 to 1999 also his retirement from Love's Memorial Sanctuary Mission Baptist church where he fellowshipped and served faithfully for over 10 years as the congregational pianist/organist.

Matthew's greatest battle was when he fought courageously yet humbly with mastic melanoma. He succumbed April 4, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at Little Company Mary Hospital in the arms of his daughter Ruth, his niece Lawan by his side and his son Timothy nearby.

Preceding him in death are his parents, 2 brother; John and Walter, 1 sister, Eloise and his wife Esther. He leaves to mourn his passing 1 son, Timothy A. Stewart, 1 daughter, Ruth G. Bradfield, grandson, Shawn M. Barnet and Perris Beverly. Brothers, Sylvester & Melvin Stewart; sisters, Dorothy Green, Eleanor Brock, Mary Sutherland, Betty Redman-Harris, Marcella Ashby and a host of other relatives and friend to numerous to name.

Services will be held on Friday, April 13, 2001 in the Love Memorial Sanctuary. Interment will follow in the Lincoln Cemetery.
