Neta F. Schafer, widow of lumber pioneer, dies
Neta F. Schafer, 94, widow of lumber pioneer John D. Schafer and a resident of Aberdeen for the past 40 years, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1993, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital.
Mrs. Schaffer was born Sept. 16, 1898, between Brady and Satsop to Andrew and Anna (Medcalf) Smith, who owned the first car dealership in the county. She graduated from high school there in 1916 and then attended Grays Harbor Business College before working as a bookkeeper for the Brady Store.
In 1919, she married John Schafer, president of Schafer Bros., and they lived at several of the company's logging camps before moving to Montesano in 1931. They moved to Aberdeen in the mid-1950s.
Her husband died in 1956.
She was a longtime member of Crescent Orthopedic, YMCA Ladies Auxiliary Club 16, Daughters of the Pioneers, the Washington Athletic Club and the United Methodist Church of Montesano. She had been a member of the Montesano Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than years.
She liked to travel and took many trips to the Orient and cruises around the world. She most enjoyed spending summers on Hood Canal with her grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Hoyle of Seattle, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. Guy (Bernice) Marcy, died in 1989.
The funeral is set for 1 p.m. Monday at the Whiteside Funeral Chapel in Aberdeen. Interment will follow at the Schafer family plot at Fern Hill,Cemetery.
