Francis J. Kasun, 89, of 209 N. Cedar Street, Manistique, Michigan passed away June 19, 2014 at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique, surrounded by his children.

He was born on December 2, 1924 in Manistique, the son of John and Barbara Kasun. He was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales School and Manistique High School with the Class of 1943.

Francis was employed at Manistique Papers, Inc. from 1945 to 1988, retiring as Purchasing Director.

He was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, the Elks Lodge #2026, the Knights of Columbus #632, and the St. Francis de Sales Parish. He was the manager and played trumpet for the popular local orchestra, The Swing Kings, for over 27 years. Francis also played in the Manistique City Band as well as area jazz and Dixie Land bands.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, photography, bird watching, and loved to spend time with cats and dogs. One of his most enjoyable hobbies was playing trivia games every morning on his favorite local radio station, WTIQ. He was proud of the fact that he won the maximum number of prizes allowed, plus numerous "atta boys" each month.

The highlight of Francis' bowling career occurred on March 25, 1948. He bowled a perfect "300" at the Manistique Elks Club, becoming the first bowler in the Upper Peninsula to achieve that elusive goal during league play. This feat earned him a gold ring from the American Bowling Conference and he proudly wore the ring for the rest of his life.

Francis is survived by his children, Francis John (Maribeth) Kasun, David Michael(fiancé Carole Lynn Hare) Kasun,. Carol Ann (Darrell) Dixson; grandson, Benjamin David (Be) Stoll; great-grandson Michael David; great-great-grandsons, Ashton and Camden; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special nephew Robert (Celia Denov) Bell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward, John Jr.; sisters, Angela, Katherine, Anna, and Amelia; and his grandson, Thomas Kasun.

In accordance with Francis' wishes, there will be no services.

Memorials may be directed to the Manistique Senior Center in honor of his life.
