Zacharias Brown served in Company E. 124th U.S. Colored Infantry in the Civil War.

His name appears on Plaque D-128 on the National African American Civil War Soldiers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Zacharias received an Army Invalid Pension beginning on Aug 27, 1888 for severe deafness in both ears.

In the 1910 census of Chicago he is shown as 86 years old widower born in 1824 in KY. and residing with his son John Brown and wife.

When he died on May 15, 1913 the records state he was 91 years old born in Kentucky in 1822, and that he was a janitor by trade and residing at 6235 Loomis Ave., Chicago. He was buried at Lincoln Cemetery on May 18, 1913.

Note: His death certificate states he is buried in Lincoln Cemetery, another source says Oak Hill Cemetery.
