Van Evra Bailey, a prominent Portland architect, died at his Gleneden Beach home Monday.

Mr. Bailey, 77, was born in Portland. Although he lacked a formal education in the field of architecture, he worked as a draftsman and learned architecture in the office of Portland architect Otis J. Fitch.

Mr. Bailey was well known for large homes he designed and helped construct in the Portland area. Several Portland architects familiar with his work said he was extremely innovative in his designs and use of materials.

He was living in semiretirement at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Janet M.; a sister, Frances Fay von Schmidt, Lake Oswego; and a brother, L. D. Bailey of Camp Verde, Ariz.

Funeral will be private, with burial in Riverview Cemetery.
