Charles 'Chas' Robert Kater

U.S. Veteran

Charles "Chas" Robert Kater, age 80, of West Harrison, IN passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Shawnee Springs Healthcare Center. The son of Raymond Sr. and Dorothy (Baker) Kater was born on January 6, 1934 in Harrison, OH.

Chas as most knew him, married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Spraul on September 26, 1953 at St. John the Baptist Church in Harrison. Chas lived in Harrison all his life, except while he was serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He spent a year in Okinawa, where he learned to hate rice and Chas & Audrey lived in Killeen, TX for a while. The military put him together with his good friend Herb Mattair and they have stayed in contact over the years. From his service, Chas earned the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

Chas graduated from Harrison High School in 1951. He played sports in high school and taught his kids all about them. Chas also had quite a reputation around town as being a ‘pool shark'. Back in his day he was the guy to beat. He was also known for his love of betting the ponies at Turfway. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #199, the VFW Post #7570 and St. John the Baptist church.

When Chas & Audrey got married they had planned to start a family right away, but that didn't work out for them. So instead they doted on their nieces and nephews and "Uncle Chas" became a favorite to all. When their children came seven years later, that was a blessing and being a dad was the most important thing in Chas' life. Lisa was born first, Chris came 21/2 years later and the big surprise, Kelly 8 years after that. Chas worked for many years for and retired from Quantum Chemical.

Chas lost the love of his life, Audrey 25 years ago. He spent those last 25 years being the best dad and grandpa he could be. Audrey would be proud of what a great job he has done with their family. Chas was a very kind hearted man and was often spoke of as being such a ‘nice man' ….whether it was people he knew all his life or the girls at the checkout at Kroger and the bank. He stole the hearts of everyone at Shawnee Springs from the nurses to the residents. He will be remembered for his smile and his Big Blue Eyes. Chas will truly leave a void in everyone's life who was lucky enough to know him and love him.

Chas is survived by his children, Lisa (Mike) Wiley of Harrison, Chris Kater of West Harrison, IN and Kelly (Joseph) Campbell of West Harrison, IN along with five grandchildren, Brandi, Audrey, Christopher, Kyle and Hannah and brother Jim (Bev) Kater of Harrison, OH. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his great granddaughter, Adalyn and his brother Raymond Jr. Kater.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 5-8pm with funeral service on Wednesday, June 25 at 10:30am all at Jackman Kercheval Meyers Funeral Home, Harrison, OH. Rev. Harold Shackelford and Father Jeff Kemper officiating. Burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Harrison, OH with military graveside rites.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Cincinnati c/o the funeral home.
