Mr. Charles Bernice Butler of the Watervale Community died at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning June 20, 2014 at the Quality Care Health Center in Lebanon. He was 79.

Monday afternoon June 23rd funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Bro. Jamie Duke and Mr. Butler's pastor Bro. Claude Henley officiated at the 1 p.m. services. Burial followed in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Butler was born September 29, 1934 in the Duke Hollow in Jackson County and was one of nine children of the late Herbert Cordell Butler who died at the age of 70 on November 5, 1977 and Ruby Irene Hailey Butler who died at the age of 82 on February 24, 1994.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Faye Butler Silcox-Burditt who died August 8, 2003 at the age of 59 and four brothers, Charles who died as an infant, James Henry Butler who died May 25, 2002 at the age of 72, Bobby Glenn Butler Sr. who died January 22, 2002 at the age of 65 and Claude Butler who died June 12, 2014 at the age of 75.

On April 2, 1955 in Rossville, Georgia he was married to Hiwassie native Margaret Elizabeth Duke.

Mr. Butler retired September 2, 1999 from Beck-Arnley World Parts in Nashville, a division of the Dana Corporation. He was employed there in parts distribution for over twenty three years.

Mr. Butler was a former member of the Smith County Rescue Squad and became a part of that organization in 1967 just a year after the squads inception. He was actively involved in the June flood of 1969 in Red Boiling Springs, the May flood of 1975 in Carthage and the August flood of 1982 in Pleasant Shade.

He was a charter member of the Trinity Full Gospel Church in South Carthage where he served as the church clerk.

Surviving in addition to his wife of just over fifty nine years are three children, Gary Butler and wife Debbie, Charles Butler and wife Lisa all of Defeated Creek, Glenda Butler Smith and husband James of South Carthage; sister, Mollie Anderson and husband Billy of Watertown; two brothers, Larry Butler and wife Carolyn of Watervale, Ronnie Butler and wife Frances of Carthage; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to the Trinity Full Gospel Church.
