Verna Shanholtzer Morton, 87, of Rushville, Illinois, died on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Culbertson Long Term Care facility in Rushville.
She was born March 13, 1913, in Coatsburg, Illinois, the daughter of the late James A. and Nettie (Olson) Shanholtzer. She married Lloyd Edwin Morton on Jan. 25, 1942, in Trenton, Mo. Lloyd passed away on March 9, 2002.
Several nieces and nephews survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Ferne Lawlis; and four brothers, James William, Wesley Albert, John and Glen Shanholtzer.
Mrs. Morton attended schools in Coatsburg and graduated from Maplewood High School in Camp Point, Illinois in 1931. She holds a two-year diploma from Western Illinois University, a bachelor of education degree from National College in Education in Evanston and a master’s degree in school administration from Northwestern University in Evanston.
She taught school in Adams and Hancock counties in Illinois before moving to Riverdale, Illinois in Cook County. She then taught school at Arbor Park School in Oak Forest, Illinois and became principal of that same school. She served as superintendent of Oak Forest School District 145 in Cook County for 25 years. Mrs. Morton was honored on November 14, 1971, when School District 145 named a school in her honor, the Morton Gingerwood School located in the Gingerwood Subdivision of the Oak Forest school district. Mrs. Morton spent a total of 45 years in education before retiring on June 15, 1974.
After moving to Rushville in 1974, she owned and operated a nursery school for four year olds and did private tutoring. She also did substitute teaching in the Rushville and Beardstown schools.
She served 14 years on the Rushville Public Library Board and several years on the Great River Library System Board where she served two terms as president.
She was a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of School Administrators, Bremen Township School Administrators where she served as secretary from 1962-1963, and President 1964-1965. She was a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, the Illinois Parent Teachers Association and Administrative Women in Education (Chicago Chapter). She served as program chairwoman and president of the Calumet Valley Division of the Illinois Education Association.
Mrs. Morton is listed in “Who’s Who” in American Education Volume 21 and 22 and in “Who’s Who” in American Women, Sixth Edition, 1970-1971.
She was also a member of Pi Lambda Theta International Honor Society, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Sigma Zeta and a past member of the Rushville Business and Professional Women’s Club.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rushville, where she served on the board. In 1984, she received the Paul Harris Fellow, from the Rushville Rotary Club. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star Macomb Chapter 123.
Mrs. Morton is interred, next to her husband, at Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, Illinois.
