Charles J. Dement, 100, of the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 19 Remington Circle, East Dubuque, Ill., died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Dunleith Cemetery, both in East Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Dement was employed at Farley and Loetscher as the best "stair man" in the area. He also was known for his skills with walnut turnings and birdhouses.

He was born on March 21, 1903, in Dubuque, son of Frank and Jenny (Kibby) Dement. He married Elsie Ziegenfuss on May 31, 1921, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque.

Charlie always had a smile and a friendly word.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Stabelfeldt, of Milwaukee; a son, Harold (Irene) Dement, of Dubuque; and eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Elsie, in June 1978; a son, Jackie Dement, in infancy; and five grandchildren, Rocky Joe Dement, Dean Dement, Guy Meyer, Rose Marie Soppe and Connie Dement.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.

The Dement family would like to extend their thanks to the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab staff, Dr. Luke Dolan and Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern for Charlie.

We will never forget the twinkle in your eye. God bless you, Charlie.
