The Silver Star was bestowed upon Cpl. Ervin Smith 1977 for gallantry in action near Romance, France on Oct 31 and Nov 1, 1918 for voluntarily repairing telephone lines during a heavy shelling barrage from the enemy. Smith entered the army June 1, 1917 in Detroit and was sent to Europe in May 1918. He returned to the United States May 3, 1919 and received an honorable discharge on May 15, 1919 at Fort Custer. Because of an oversight, Mr. Smith did not receive his award. Workers at the Department of Veterans Affairs noticed the oversight during a records check in 1977.
