March 10, 1932 ~ July 20, 2009
Shirley was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan to loving parents Angus and Ethel McDonald. She spent her summers at Madge Lake with an extended family of aunts and uncles to whom she was the only child.
In 1950, she graduated from Kamsack Collegiate Institute and in 1951 met Archie on a double date. They married June 18, 1952 and were blessed with twin boys Gary and Donald, who were born in 1956. The family moved to The Pas, Manitoba in 1960 where Shirley worked as a telephone operator. She took on a second job as a bookkeeper. In 1963, Joanne was born.
Archie transferred with the CNR to Kamloops in 1975. Shirley, then 43 years old, went back to school to Cariboo College and completed a certificate as a legal stenographer. She enjoyed working at Tranquille School until it closed in 1984. She devoted the next two decades to caring for her mother and closest friend in their Kamloops home.
Archie retired from the CNR in 1988, and the three of them enjoyed many trips in their RV and long summer days by their backyard pool, often with visiting grandchildren Derek, Karen and Alex (Donald); Graeme and Evelyn (Gary); and, Hannah and Emily (Joanne).
Ethel passed away in 2002 at the age of almost 102, and Shirley always expected to meet that goal. She took great care with her diet, her fitness and her health and told the oncologist, "Other than having cancer, I'm really very healthy." Her remarkable positive, joyful and loving outlook promised a long and fulfilling life. She was very active in the local chapter of the Rebekah Lodge as Past Noble Grand. Her close friends in the bridge club and her season's tickets with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra ensured a lively social life.
She was active at the Curves gym until diagnosed with recurrence of her cancer, just three weeks before her passing.
Shirley was at home with her family until hours before she passed away quietly at 8:10 a.m. July 20, 2009, in the women's room of the Emergency Department of the Royal Inland Hospital, under the affectionate care of the emergency staff, her family physician Dr. Thomasse, and her loving husband and children.
The Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive.
