Garland E. Cole
April 21, 1921 - June 20, 2014

Garland E. Cole, 93, was born April 21, 1921 in Rochester, Texas during the great depression to Edmond William and Betha Mae Jackson Cole.

He started working in the cotton fields at a very young age. He joined the United States Army in 1940. While other soldiers complained about the SOS (hamburger gravy on bread) he felt he was eating like a king, and usually ate several other helpings shoved aside by his buddies.

He met his wife Maxine in Lordsburg NM. at age 21, and Maxine was only 15. He served in Germany fighting Hitler's army, and went to many other places such as Austria, and France. Maxine gave birth to their first child Shirley after he was shipped to Texas. He shipped out and sent Maxine to Mississippi to be with her twin sister where she gave birth to a son, Garland Wayne in a run down country hospital. He arrived back in the states in 1945 after the war had ended, and became employed for Phelps Dodge Copper Company.

Later came Sharon Diane, and lastly, Vickey Lynn. Garland worked for the track gang and as a break man until he became a locomotive engineer a few years later until his retirement from Phelps Dodge in 1981. He retired from Phelps Dodge at age 60. They ultimately made their home in Safford, AZ. until Maxine became ill, and bought a home in San Manuel, AZ to be close to their daughter Vickey, as she was a certified home care giver. Garland and Maxine were married 58 years when she went to be with Jesus. Maxine went to heaven on Sept. 15, 2001, shortly after the bombing of the twin towers. Four years after Maxine's passing, Garland re-married Geneva Graves of Kearny AZ. He later moved back to Safford, AZ where he had made his home for the last year of his life.

Garland was a very caring and giving person. He helped numerous family members financially, and materially, along with friends in need of anything. He was a life long member of the Veteran's Association, and always wore a cap with the VA logo on it. He raised his children to be very honest, truthful, and supremely patriotic. He was a stickler for watching the news, and made his children watch it with him every evening while they lived at home. Right up to the end of his life his television was always on a news station. He stayed on top of current world events. He will be missed and remembered by everyone who knew him for the loving and giving person he was. He was a good Christian man, whom God blessed abundantly with 93 years of life.
