His obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, December 19, 1912.

David Smith was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1833, and was brought, when three years old, by his parents to the vicinity of Carrollton, where he spent the remainder of his life. He united with the Presbyterian Church, while wet a mere boy, and honorably filled a number of it official positions for many years. He was united in marriage May 23, 1854, to Margaret H. EcEldery, and together they happily sailed the sea of life for nearly 58 years.
God blessed their union with five children; James and Milton, Mrs. A. R. Roudebush, of Carrollton; Mrs. E. E. Downs, of Canton, and Mrs. Ed Aller, near Carrollton. There are also eight grandchildren. Mr. Smith suffered all summer from that dreaded disease, dropsy. On December 15 he quietly fell asleep at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 21 days. Funeral was held on Tuesday from his late residence in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends. There being no Presbyterian pastor in the field, the services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Geier, of the Reformed church, whose scriptural basis for comforting words, was Job 5:26. Interment was made in Grandview cemetery. In his demise the the family has lost a devoted father and husband, and the community an earnest christian. The sympathy of all go forth to the bereaved.

Civil War Veteran, Enlisted in Company B 198th Ohio Infantry January 25, 1865. Discharged May 8, 1865.
