Wayne William Byers, 90, of Chambersburg, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at ManorCare, He was born Sept. 14, 1923 in Chambersburg, the son of the late Wayne E. and Marguerite B. (Dale) Byers. A 1941 graduate of C.H.S., he received his BS from Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1948 and MS in 1952 from the University of Pittsburg. He then pursued his doctorate studies in Microbiology at Pennsylvania State University. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sigma XI- National Science Honorary, George Washington Lodge # 143 Order of Free and Accepted Masons and was a highly respected teacher of mathematics at CASHS for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Enlisting in the US Army in June of 1943, he served from New Guinea to Luzon as Chief Radar operator and personnel supervisor, retiring in June of 1946 with the rank of Sgt. Major. Awards he received include: the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, American Victory Service Medal, AS-PAC Theater Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal. In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, he enjoyed sailing and hiking. His hobbies include working with the layout for his O-trains and restoring the trains he had as a child. He had an amazing ability and gained great satisfaction in analyzing how things, including electronics, should work and repairing them when they broke. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia D. Byers of Chambersburg; three children: Karen (Mrs. Christopher) Nelson, Keith (husband of Kate) Byers, both of Hagerstown, MD, Eric (husband of Kristen) Byers, Cazenovia, NY; five grandchildren: Patrick D., Anna C., Patricia H, and Jack K. Byers and Robert Nelson III. The funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Tara MaGoon officiating. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery with the Charles Nitterhouse Post #1599 V.F.W. providing military honors.
