Jerry L. Darby, age 73, of Sturgis, passed away late Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2014, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka, Ind.
He was born Nov. 12, 1940, in Sturgis, a son of the late Patrick John and Sophie M. (Kambol) Darby.
Jerry was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1959.
On Nov. 12, 1960, he married the love of his life, Joann Smith, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis.
He retired from Sturgis Iron and Metal following more than 25 years of dedicated employment as sales manager. He also owned and operated Sportsarama in Sturgis and for over 15 years he worked in sales at Harter Corporation in Sturgis.
Jerry was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, B.P.O.Elks #1381 and served as a Sturgis city commissioner for 13 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. He was an avid sports fan, some of his favorite teams to follow were the Detroit Tigers, Pistons and Lions, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and he was a fan of NASCAR. Jerry had many hobbies and involvements, but what he truly loved was times he was surrounded by his entire family, especially his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Joann; two daughters, Shelly (James) Schultz of Granger, Ind., and Thayma (Brett) Lutz of Centreville; four grandchildren, Jerry (Amy) Schultz of Elkhart, Ind., Eric Schultz of Granger, Ind., and Quinnlynn Lutz and LilyAnn Lutz, both of Centreville; two sisters, Patricia (Keith) Romine and Thayma Darby, both of Sturgis; two brothers, Charles (Judy) Darby of Nantucket, Mass., and Michael (Carole) Darby of Richland; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. today, Friday, at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. A funeral Mass celebrating the life of Jerry Darby will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Father German Perez-Diaz will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
