"The Black family was well established in Vermillion, Richland County, Ohio, until 1837, when the elder son of the family (John) lost his farm and decided to move to Illinois where land was to be had for the taking. Judging from the land deal, the rest of the family followed very soon. The sister, Rhoda, with her husband and family were already in St. Francisville, Lawrence County, by the time John reached there, and soon the whole family had taken farms and were settled close to what is now Bridgeport, Lawrence county, Illinois. They were staunch Baptists, and when a church was erected the names of the Black family were all engraved on a plaque outside the door. So many of the family lived there the settlement was called Blacksburg; the name, however, was later changed to Bridgeport. In Ohio William Black owned and operated on his own land the first grist mill on the Black Fork of the Vermillion River."1
John Black died Oct. 15, 1839 at Bridgeport, Lawrence County, Illinois. He was buried at Bridgeport in Oct. 1839.

∼From all accounts, this John Black is the son of William and Sarah Stevens Black. However, the death date on the gravestone is a mystery because family records and stories indicate that John passed away 15 October 1839 instead of 13 November 1848. Since John had a son named John Lake Black that died 13 October 1848, according to family records, it's possible that a mix-up of dates happened between father and son and that the stone was made sometime after 1848. If so, the stone engraver calculated John's life span based on the incorrect death date supplied to him.

Memorial #13159023 shows a photo of the gravestone lying flat. It appears that since that time that the stone was repaired to a standing position.
