Benjamin Jackson Black was born on April 6, 1828 at Vermillion, Richland County, Ohio to John David Black and Mary Cline. He married Mary Ann King on 8 Dec. 1851, Lawrence County, Illinois. He was killed during the Blackhawk War by Indians on Oct. 17, 1865 in Ephraim, Canyon, near Ephraim Sanpete County, Utah.

Benjamin J. Black, 32, born Ohio
Mary Ann, 29, born North Carolina
Their children were:
Mary E., 7,Illinois
Lucy A., 6, Illinois
Sarah C., 4, Illinois
Eliza J., 2, Illinois
I have their marriage date as 8 Dec 1851, Lawrence County, Illinois.
After Benjamin died Mary married 2) William M. Huftile, in Wyoming and they had 3 sons.
Mary died in Gillett, Montana."

"THIS MONUMENT ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE SEVEN PEOPLE WHO WERE KILLED BY INDIANS ON THE 17TH OF OCTOBER, 1865 DURING A RAID ON EPHRAIM. THE FOUR MEN WERE KILLED AS THE INDIANS CAME DOWN THE CANYON-NAMELY, SOREN N. JESPERSON, BENJAMIN J. BLACK, WILLIAM T. HITE. WILLIAM W. THORPE, MARTIN P. KUHRE, HIS WIFE HANSINE J. KUHRE, AND A 17 YEAR OLD GIRL, ELIZABETH PETERSEN, WERE SLAIN WHILE IN THE FIELD WEST OF TOWN WHER THEY WERE GATHERING POTATOES. THE INDIANS LEFT KUHRE'S SON 2 YEARS OLD ON THE FIELD UNHARMED. THE SEVEN WERE PLACED SIDE BY SIDE IN ONE GRAVE.
ERECTED BY WILLIAM DOBBIE KUHRE, THE 2 YEAR OLD SON WHO IS NOW IN HIS 91ST YEAR"
