Mrs. Maxine Malony Watson of 1917-B Front Street died unexpectedly Monday at Atlantic Beach of an apparent heart attack.
She was born in DeWitt, Neb. and attended the Stephens College and received her masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Social Sorority. In the late 1930's she was a reporter for the Herald-Sun Papers and reported primarily the Durham and Duke University interests. She was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church and for many years she was a member of the church choir. She and her husband were contributors to the shell collection at Duke University. She was active in the Durham Arts Council.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Edward F. Smith and Dr. James T. Cleland. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth W. Scheder of Baltimore, Md; one son, Karl Brantley Watson III of Columbia, Md.; her mother, Mrs. Myrtle Winterton Malony of Durham; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John C. Dailey, W. R. Mattox, Box Bradshaw, Herman Rhinehart, Norwood Thomas, Jr. and Dr. John Blackburn.
Instead of flowers, the family suggest that contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
