Santford Sylvanis McClellan, called Sant, was born 4 September 1881 in Clinton Co., Indiana, probably the fifth child of David Riley and Mariah (Cripe) McClellan. He married, first, 31 December 1901, in Clinton County, Indiana to Ada Paul (daughter of Samuel F. and Hester (Hitett) Paul). The couple was childless and the marriage ended in a divorce after about 18 or 19 years. On 19 November 1921, Sant married at Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana, Rozella Maud Bugby (born 9 September 1892 at Tippecanoe, Marshall Co., Indiana, daughter of Erwin Monroe and Mary Ellen (Winter) Bugby). Rozella was a telephone operator and a member of the Methodist Church. Sant was a farmer and had attended the German Baptist (Dunkard) Church and may have been a member of that church.

Sant McClellan suffered from chills and fevers as a young child and was unable to attend school much of the time. He completed third grade only. Rozella helped him with his reading and he was able to read newspapers etc. and mathematics quite well enough.

Sant died of a heart attack 25 February 1943 at his home in Monroe Township, Delaware Co., Indiana.
