Bernard H. Chadbourne Jr. of Sanford, Maine peacefully passed away on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at the Newton Center in Sanford at the age of 90.

Mr. Chadbourne was born on August 28, 1923 to Bernard and Ruby (Ford) Chadbourne of Sanford. After graduating from high school in 1941, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard on December 7th, 1942 and proudly served his country during World War II. His military service took him to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for shore duty and then at sea aboard the USS Joyce, a destroyer escort assigned to the protection of US occupation forces at the end of the war. He was honorably discharged from the service in February of 1946 after three years of service.

Following the Coast Guard, "Chaddy" or "Bernie" as he was called by many began his working career as a truck driver for the Railway Express Agency (REA), a job that he enjoyed for over 34 years. During this time, he married the love of his life, Marjorie Dunnells, on May 28, 1950 and the couple enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Following his employment at REA, Mr. Chadbourne helped build the fishing vessel "The Ugly Anne" of Perkins Cove and concluded his working career at Hussey Seating Company in North Berwick where he made many good friends over 7 years of employment.

The Chadbourne camp and farm property at Square Pond was a treasured sanctuary where family and lake friends enjoyed many special times during the summer months. While ice fishing, hunting and woodworking were his favorite hobbies, Mr. Chadbourne also loved singing and was a faithful member of the North Parish Congregational Church choir in Sanford for over 60 years. While he did not read music, he had a beautiful bass voice and cherished the many friends who he sang with over the years.

Mr. Chadbourne was predeceased by his sister, Geneva Chadbourne Ladd.

Surviving are his wife Marjorie Dunnells Chadbourne, a daughter Jane Chadbourne Kirton and her husband Robert of Sanford, and a son James Chadbourne of Wells. He was a loving Grandpa and great grandfather to Laura Kirton and David Kirton of Sanford, Amy Chadbourne and Alex Chadbourne of Wells, and great grandson AJ Anderson of Sanford.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Chadbourne's life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
