Sudden Death of Silas J. Baker, a Veteran of Stittville
Stittville, July 6 – The community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Silas J. Baker, which occurred yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, the result of heart disease. Mr. Baker had experienced trouble with his heart for some time, but his death was entirely unexpected. He was a son of the late Warren Baker and was born on the Baker farm homestead Nov. 23, 1843. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in the 117th Regiment, New York Volunteers, and at the close of the war received an honorable discharge. He was well known throughout Oneida County as a maker and seller of fancy baskets, made of butternuts. He was injured on the railroad about thirty years ago and had been a cripple ever since, having entirely lost the use of his limbs. He leaves his wife and two brothers, Fred A. of Syracuse and Ardeen Baker of Utica.
Member of the 117th Reg. NYS Vol
