John and Frances were in their early forties when they first heard the gospel preached. They were baptized in 1847 and became active in the Church. They always kept an open door for the missionaries. They children were all baptized. They were a musical family. John composed music and the children played and sang it along with other music. John also played a bass fiddle. They lived in a small village called Foilshill just outside of Coventry . They finally moved to Coventry in 1857 . John and Frances wanted to move to America but waited for their daughter Louisa 's husband to turn 21, so he could receive his inheritance. They finally left in 1864 . Due to the Civil War in America , it made for difficulties in their travel across the states. They joined the Joseph Rawlins Company. Louisa was very ill with mountain fever. Many died and so did their son Joshua . Upon arrival in the valley, they settled in Millcreek . John died of heart disease. He remained a faithful member of the church all his life.
