R. Maxine Barger, 89, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center of Alton. Born on Jan. 6, 1925, in St. James, she was the daughter of William Thomas and Cynthia (Ketchum) Malone. She had worked in the guage steel division of the Olin Corporation before retiring. In 1943, she married Raymond James. He died in 1945. She then married Willard Barger on Jan. 12, 1946, in Hartford. He died May 5, 2006. Surviving are a son, Rev. Raymond (Lillie) James of Brandon, Fla.; three daughters, Fleta (Bob) Miller of Mesa, Ariz., Tanya (Beryl) Kinder of Hartford, Cindy (David) Roper of East Alton; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a daughter, Penny Sue Barger; four brothers, Oliver, Frank, James and Walter Eugene Malone; three sisters, Dorine Williams, Gladys Spann, Agnes White; and a half-sister, Maggie Basden. Visitation was Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Hartford Assembly of God Church. Her son, Rev. Raymond James will officiate. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to St. Louis Children's Hospital or Hartford Assembly of God- Feed the Children Program.
