William DAVIS, II

DAVIS, II, William Dr. William Mahlon Davis II, 82, of Sandy Springs passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late William Mahlon Davis and Marie Proctor Davis of St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Davis graduated from the Emory University School of Dentistry, Class of 1955. During his pre-dental preparation at Emory, he met Marilyn Belanus, who was a freshman at Agnes Scott College, at the home of a fraternity sponsor. Marilyn became his wife on June 26, 1954. The newlyweds made their home at Thompson Hall on the Emory campus until Bill's graduation. After graduation, Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant dental officer. He was deployed at Fort Carson, Colorado. The couple enjoyed traveling to the western National Parks during Dr. Davis' two-year tour of duty. Dr. and Mrs. Davis returned to Atlanta in 1957 and set up his dental practice in East Atlanta, later moving to downtown and then to Dunwoody. For 25 years he treated patients pro bono at the Ben Massell Dental Clinic in Midtown. He particularly enjoyed teaching the MCG dental students who were observers there. In his dentistry, and all through his life, Dr. Davis believed that nothing was worth doing if it was not done right. He was a perfectionist in his dentistry. Dr. Davis was a man of many interests: certainly his major hobby was pistol shooting. He was a founding member of the South River Gun Club, where he called many pistol matches. He was a Director of the National Rifle Association. He was a lobbyist for the Georgia Sport Shooters Association at the General Assembly. As a shooter, he set 53 national records and attained the status of Distinguished Pistol Shooter. He presented many seminars on gun safety. He was also an outstanding photographer. Over the years, he filled his home with photographs of places where he and Marilyn traveled. He also was an avid genealogist, tracing his family's ancestry back many generations to England and the Netherlands. He had a love for classical music, to which he would listen for hours on end. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his beloved Marilyn, his wife of nearly 60 years, his daughter, Marie Davis (Dr. Jeff) Turner, and his grandson, Michael Davis Turner and his fiancée, Kaitlyn Chandler. There will be a private burial service at Arlington Cemetery on Friday, March 14, 2014, to be followed by the funeral at 2:00 p.m. at the Northside United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors in the church parlor between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030, or to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., N.E., Atlanta, GA 30319.
