Kanab, May 6. Funeral services for Joseph William Chatterley, 80, early Utahn and former member of selective service board No.88, were conducted Tuesday in the Kanab North ward chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Bishop Burton McAllister. Mr. Chatterley died at his home May 1 of a heart ailment.
A son of Martin and Christina Mackelprang Chatterley, he was born April 19, 1868. As a young man, he moved to Johnson, Kane County, where the family was engaged in farming and stock raising. He married Eliza Jane Jackson, Oct. 16, 1894 in the St. George L.D.S. temple. The couple moved to Kanab about 1903 where they have since resided, with Mr. Chatterley continuing in the livestock industry.
Mr. Chatterley was active in L.D.S. church affairs, having been Sunday School Superintendent in Johnson 53 years ago. He was second counselor in the Kanab stake high priests' quorum. Other church interests included genealogical research and church welfare gardening. For about two years during World War II he served on the local selective service board.
Survivors include his widow; seven children, Martin J. Chatterley, Mrs. Della C. Crosby, Mrs. Minnie C. Meeks, Mrs. Louella C. Baker, Mrs. Viona C. Mognett and Grandon Chatterley of Kanab, and Mrs. La Verna C . Bringhursts of Toquerville; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Thorley, Cedar City, and Mrs. Minnie Harris, Lehi; 38 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Kanab cemetery under the direction of Pickett mortuary.
