Vincent (Vince) Hill, 87 slipped away peacefully Sunday January 9, 2011, in Roseburg, Ore.

He was born November 24, 1923 in Bellingham, Wash., to Vincent and Thea Hill. His family moved to California when he was two years old. He graduated from Mt. View Union High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Navy, where he served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Fanshaw Bay in Aviation Ordinance and saw action in the Pacific.

After his discharge in 1946 he was employed in the family grocery business in Los Altos and later at Gordon's Chuck House owned by his mother and stepfather in Scotts Valley. He retired from Golden West Restaurants in Salinas in 1988 after 23 years.

Vince moved to Roseburg, Ore. to a retirement community six years ago and enjoyed an active social life until recently. He loved golf, football and old movies and collected elephants and road runners.

Vince is survived by his wife, Genna; his daughters, Ruth (Tom) Jones and Althea (Steve) Larkin; and sons, Michael (Cathy) Hill and Scott Hill. He had four stepsons, Gary Suthers, Ronand Suthers, Daniel (Donna) Suthers and was preceded in death by stepson, Jeffery Suthers. He left a great legacy of nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren.

His ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony off the coast of California in the spring.
