The entire Farmer family joined the Latter Day Saints, Richard in December 19, 1843, baptised by John Thomas Smith. On May 26, 1856, when they departed for America about the ship Horizon.
The trip to Salt Lake City was difficult; Elizabeth Morris Farmer, family matriarch, died somewhere en route. Richard Jr. and his wife Harriet stayed in Iowa to bury her. It's probably wise they stayed in Iowa, as many lives were lost by the handcart travelers to SLC. By the 1870's, Richard and Harriet had followed the teachings of Joseph Smith III who was then President of the Reformed Latter Day Saints.
Richard's daughter Emily is lost to time. His daughter Anne Maria married Adolph Smith, a Danish immigrant. The Smiths moved to Albion in Boone County, Nebraska, and had seven children. They are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Boone Co NE.
