She was born in Knocktoby, Gort, Co Galway, the daughter of Peter Nelly and Mary Callinan. She married Thomas Curley of Cloone, Gort on 6 February 1902 in Shanaglish. Her other siblings were Michael (buried in Deansgrange, Dublin), Kate Loughrey(buried in Crusheen, Co Clare), Martin (buried in Shanaglish, Co Galway) and Bridget Kearney (also buried in Shanaglish).

She was also mother to Bridie Jordan (buried in Shanaglish), Tom (buried in St Joseph's Cemetery, Yonkers), Jack (buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla New York), Michael (formerly of Cricklewood and Carrickmacross, buried in New Broomfield Cemetery outside Carrickmacross), Annie (buried with her father in Kiltartan), Lily Flood (buried in Deansgrange, Dublin) and Emily Mosley (buried in Nottingham)
