According to the Lowell Sun, Lt. Coffey was a crew officer of a Marauder medium bomber, one of three such planes lost in the climax of a big allied air and sea invasion rehearsal over the English Channel, September 9, 1934.

Lt. Coffey was participating in once of these missions, and was in the groups which blasted the coastal batteries at Boulogne.
