He served in the War of 1812. Enlisted in the 36th U. S. Infantry Regiment by Lieutenant J. H. Ballard on May 12, 1813 at Baltimore, Maryland. He received bounty land in Arkansas for his service.

He was appointed Postmaster for Pelham, Tennessee on May 14, 1833 and served until March 2, 1842. A civil engineer, he was also elected Surveyor for Grundy County, Tennessee on August 5, 1844.

He died at 6 pm on the 26th of November in 1864 at the age of 69 at the residence of Mrs. Rhea, 7 miles south-west of Gadsden, Cherokee (now Etowah) County, Alabama.
