Local Banker Dead at 74
Arthur Harold Saville, Sr.,
74, 1320 W. 27th, died Saturday in a Topeka hospital where he was readmitted July 16, and underwent surgery Aug. 13. He had cancer.

He was a banker in Topeka 50 years and was vice president of Merchants National Bank from 1945 until he retired a few years ago. He continued as a member of the bank's board of directors.

He was born Nov. 15, 1898, at Belvue in Pottawatomie County and spent most of his life in Topeka. He formerly lived at 3642 Huntoon many years.
Mr. Saville attended Topeka public schools and Washburn University where he was affiliated with Alpha Delta fraternity. He joined the staff at Merchants National Bank as a clerk in 1923 and worked in all departments of the bank before he was elected assistant cashier in 1927.
He was named cashier in 1941 and became a vice president of the bank in 1945. He had been a director since 1944.

Mr. Saville was a member of the Topeka Board of Education from 1939 to 1951 and was president of the board in 1940-41 and again in 1949-50. He was a past president of the Washburn University Alumni Assn., and had served on the university's board of trustees.
He was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church and was a former treasurer and member of the board of trustees at the church. He also had served as a member of the United Methodist Home Board.
He had been a member of the Shawnee County Unit of the American Cancer Society and had been chairman of the executive committee of the Kansas division of the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Saville was a 50-year member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 90, AF&AM, Topeka Consistory No. 1, Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine, and Topeka Elks Lodge No. 204. He also was a 50-year member of Helena Chapter No. 210, Order of Eastern Star.
He had served on the Shawnee County Selective Service Board and was a member of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce. He served on the board of directors of Topeka Country Club from 1958 to 1962.

He was married to Elinor Eckert Oct. 2, 1920, in Topeka. She died in April, 1928. He was married to Margaret Eckert June 1, 1929. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Arthur Harold Saville Jr., 3627 York way; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Jean Clouse, 2214 W. 15th, and Elinor Louise Saville, 2400 Plass; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Anderson, Houston; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shawnee County Unit of the American Cancer Society, 824 1/2 Tyler, 66612. Mr. Saville will lie in state at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home until noon Monday after which the casket will remain closed.
