John Martin Hargrove
John Martin Hargrove died on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, in his hometown of Dallas. John was many things to many people. A larger than life character, John was a spirited, charismatic soul. He was an emotional, passionate man. John advocated for the things he believed in and for the people he loved. A memorial service will be held in Lake Highlands at Bethany Lutheran Church at 10101 Walnut Hill Ln., Dallas, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.

A fixture in Lake Highlands for more than 40 years, John loved the Wildcats. He recalled with joy playing football there with many of his lifelong friends.

To his business colleagues and partners, John was capable of achieving almost anything he set his mind to doing. John was brilliant. He owned and operated Orr-Reed Wrecking Company for more than 20 years. During that time, he devoted himself to his employees, to his business community, and to the ideal that there is beauty, character, and practicality in salvaged goods. He loved others people's junk.

To his friends, John was always a stalwart advocate. He was ready to jump in, full throttle, to help. He found himself and his greatest joy in coming to the aid of others. Whether sharing one of his signature bear hugs or intervening in a fuller way, John would meet you where you needed him to be. This willingness to give so freely extended to his closest friends and to the cold, hungry stranger who, in John, would discover love and strength without judgment.

John reserved his deepest affection for his children. They were his proudest accomplishment and his greatest loves. He gave them everything he could give them and more. He is survived by Hannah and her fianc, Darren Roberts, Sarah and Sam, and their mother, Michelle.

John was born in Waco, on July 14, 1962, to Kathy and Mac Hargrove. Today, they grieve the loss of the second of four boys as they also celebrate his life. John's love of family was well known. He loved and cared for his brothers, David, Blake and Brian, in extraordinary ways. His love for his brothers extended to his sisters-in-law, Debra and Linda. His nieces, Martha, Claire, Katie, Alice, Lois, Faith, Mary Claire, and his nephew, Mac, all looked up to this bull of a man whose personal generosity always left them astounded. John also treasured his many cousins and his special relationship with his late grandparents, Alice and Dave Cheavens of Waco.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vogel Alcove in John's memory, 7557 Rambler Road, Suite 262, Dallas, TX 75231, www.vogelalcove.org.
