Bertha grew up in Cass Co IA where she attended Union Township #2 rural school through the 8th grade. She then moved to Atlantic IA where she lived with the Herman Claussen family, worked as a nanny and attended Atlantic High School where she graduated in 1934. After normal training, she taught rural schools and worked toward her teaching certificate (correspondence courses).

On Jan 26, 1937 she married Howard Lett at Maryville, MO. They lived all their married life in Anita and Howard preceeded her in death on Jan 6, 1981. She continued living in Anita and had lived in the same house for over 60 years. Bertha was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church where she had taught Sunday School and Bible School, and had belonged to the Ladies Aid and had served as president; had served as president of the Anita PTA; had been a member of neighborhood clubs and was active in many local activities. She loved to can foods and had started the first hot lunch at the Anita School, when the parents volunteered the food and preparation. She also owned and operated a second hand shop in Anita for ten years before retiring.
