A. J. Smithson, an early-day real estate dealer of this city and father of Forrest C. Smithson, once world's champion hurdler; died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. H. Ireland, 1229 East Ash street. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Holman chapel.

Mr. Smithson was born at Keysville, Va., September 29, 1845. He served with the Confederate forces during the Civil war, and came to Portland in 1969, crossing the plains with an ox team. He became prominent here in the real estate business in Portland's early days. Three children survive: Mrs. F. H. Ireland, Forrest C. Smithson and Noton A. Smithson, an ensign in the navy.
