He and his wife Rachel appear in census records at Detroit with their daughter Anna, aged 3 years. Caspar is working as a shoemaker; all are stated to have been born in Germany, although later records show Anna was born in Detroit.
Daughters Rosa and Jessie were also born in Detroit. Rosa's birth record shows both Caspar and Rachel were born in Poland, he was then employed as a tailor.
The family next moved to Philadelphia, where infant Jessie passed away and where daughter Mary 'Mamie' was born.
From Philadelphia, the family next came to Chicago, where their son Edward was born in 1886. From there, they removed to Iron County, Wisconsin where sons Leon, Benjamin, Harold, and Rupert were all born by October of 1895.
As of the 1900 federal and 1905 Wisconsin state census, Caspar and his family had gone to Milwaukee. Their daughter Anna married Isadore Epstein and remained there. By 1910, Caspar had moved the rest of his family again, this time to Chicago.
His son, Dr. Edward Lewis, stated on his 1922 passport application that his father Caspar was born in Poland, emigrated from Bremen about October of 1878, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in the Wisconsin Circuit Court at Iron County on 20 Mar 1895. The exact location of Caspar's birth is not known, and may or may not still be part of Polish territory.
