Spanish-American War Vet Henry Savary, 88 is Dead
Henry Savary 88, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died at 6:15 a.m. today at Lawrence County General Hospital where he had been a patient since Feb 14. He resided at 1221 N. Fourth St.
Mr. Savary, who was born and reared in Coal Grove, was a son of the late Nick and Isabelle Runner Savary.
He was employed as a salesman in the area for the old Paris Shop in Ironton and in later years was a salesman for other business establishments.
Mr. Savary served as commander of the local Spanish-American War Veterans, Edward C. Smith Camp No 29, which disbanded in 1963.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
On May 12, 1903, he was united in marriage to Jennie Sands in the parsonage of the old Spencer Methodist Church.
Surviving are the widow, Jennie; three sons, William and Clyde at home, and Clarence of Ironton; three daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Nellie) Holtzapfel of Ironton, Mrs. Virgil (Ruth) Barber of Kitts Hill and Mrs. Allen (Rose) Pyles of Coal Grove; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren.
The body is at Phillips Funeral Home where friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Clarence E. Corn. Burial will be in the Soldier's Plot, Woodland Cemetery. The World War I veterans will conduct military graveside rites.
