Gregory Joseph Jacobs, age 55, died unexpectedly Oct. 28, 2008, in Hawaii, of a massive stroke. His wife, Karin, was by his side.

Greg is the father of Nicholas, born in 1988, and Elizabeth "Libby" born in 1990. He was co-owner of Jacobs Heating and Air Conditioning from 1990 until his retirement in 2006.

Born May 26, 1953, in Portland, to Basil and Twila Jacobs, he is the oldest brother of Dana, Brent, Mark and Brad. He attended Madeleine Grade School and Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1971. He attended the University of Oregon and enjoyed campus life and held close to his heart the many friendships he established.

As a child, Greg and his brothers spent hundreds of hours in the family business learning the trade from the ground up. He negotiated his first wage of 25 cents per hour at the age of 10. Greg designed, fabricated and installed custom residential and commercial heating and air conditioning systems throughout the Pacific Northwest. He was passionate about customer service and took pride in meeting the individual needs of his customers. Greg was a member of Oregon Executives, served as president, and was also a member of the Association of Builders and Contractors. Greg was extremely proud to carry on the family legacy of craftsmanship through the company his mother and father founded in 1952.

Greg played baseball with Skyline Little League at Wilshire Park in NE Portland. In grade school he played CYO football and swam for Madeleine's swim team. He spent summers swimming at the Irvington Club with his siblings and friends. Some of his best memories included time spent playing ball at the corner of NE 23rd and Stanton Street. During high school at Central, Greg played football and participated in track.

Greg took numerous trips to Central and Eastern Oregon with his dad, brothers and hunting buddies. They had good times hunting deer, elk and a variety of birds. Greg was both an accomplished hunter and horseman. Happy times were spent around the campfire telling stories, eating stew and enjoying various beverages. During the '70s Greg commercial fished the "Know Catch" as part of the dory fleet out of Pacific City. Greg, his dad, brothers and fishing friends spent many hours in the ocean catching salmon and on occasion tuna, halibut and other trophies. Greg loved these adventures and fishing was a lifetime passion.

A kind spirit with a huge heart, Greg loved his children, Nick and Libby, and was proud of their accomplishments. He worked hard to provide them ample opportunities to succeed and be happy in life. Nick is a junior at the University of Oregon and Libby is a senior at Central Catholic.

Greg met his wife, Karin Lasko, in 1993, as Karin presented an employee-banking package through Key Bank to Jacobs' employees. He immediately knew he would marry her someday (if she would agree!). Greg, being quite the "rocker", took Karin to a Rolling Stones concert for their first date. Greg and Karin were married in Las Vegas in 2002. Karin became stepmom to Nick and Libby and became a special part of the Jacobs family.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Basil. He is survived by his wife, Karin; children, Nick and Libby; mother, Twila; sister, Dana; and brothers, Brent, Mark and Brad Jacobs. He is also survived by his in-laws, Peter and Marian Johannsen; and sisters-in-law, Mary and Peggy Jacobs, Heide Johannsen and Lore Rider. Greg will be missed by his nieces, Noelle Dennis, Amanda and Molly Jacobs; and nephews, Austin, Tyler and Sammy Jacobs and Ryan Rider.

A rosary vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, in Adams Chapel at River View Cemetery, 0300 S.W. Taylor's Ferry Road. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, at St. Mary Magdalene (The Madeleine) Church, 3123 N.E. 24th Ave. A lunch reception will immediately follow Mass at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, located at 2220 N.E. Marine Dr.
