The Honorable George Munroe Stearns was born in Stoughton and educated at the Shelburne Falls Academy where he met his future wife. He came to Chicopee to study law and, after being admitted to the Hampden County bar on April 24, 1852, continued to practice law here before moving to Springfield. He served in both the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts Senate, was District Attorney of the Western District of Massachusetts, and United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. He was popularly known as "The Sage of Chicopee."
