"Sandi Kemp--mother, sister, aunt, cousin, dear friend--will be fondly remembered for her smile, her thoughtfulness and her caring ways. She reached out to others, cherishing and maintaining numerous friendships.
A 1964 graduate of Springfield High School, she received a BFA degree from Kent State University in 1967. She was employed by ASW Services and ASW Properties since 1992 where she organized successful fundraisers for the American Heart Association and edited and published the company newsletter. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Kent and sang with the choir. She was a kidney donor for her sister Patricia in 1988.
Diagnosed more than six years ago with ovarian and colon cancer, Sandi faced her illness with dignity and determination, never giving in or giving up. She enjoyed travel at home and abroad even while enduring frequent chemotherapy treatments. Many were inspired by her courage and her strong and abiding faith. She truly believed that she could "do all things through Christ who strengthened her" Philippians 4:13.
The family thanks her doctors, the nurses in the chemotherapy department at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital, Hospice of Summa, and her caregivers for their excellent care and support. Thanks also to all those who encouraged Sandi with visits, calls, cards, flowers, and many prayers.
Sandi was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Lena Povlacs and sister, Patricia Grubbs. She is survived by her sons... daughter... brother... sisters... aunt, Rose Barth (Burt) of Solon; fiancé, Tom Harvey, Largo, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road in Ellet. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, 11 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 931 East Main Street, Kent, with Rev. Dennis Schmidt officiating.
Sandi loved flowers, but asked that, in lieu of flowers, the following charities be supported in her name: Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank; American Heart Association; Chemotherapy Department at CFGH; American Cancer Society; Lutheran Women's Missionary League; Faith Lutheran Church in Kent; WKSU/classical music.
