He died in a fatal crash in South Italy, occurred 5 miles North of Bovino, exactly near Panni (Province of Foggia), on 22nd November 1944, 8:30 AM, for unknown reasons. The plane was a B-24J number 42-51747, taken off from Castelluccio Field (Foggia Airfield Complex) and was part of 451st Bomb Group, 725th squadron, 15th Air Force. All the crew died on fatal crash: Teall, Walter, Jacobsen, Bales, Oxford, Yount, Sullivan, Haser, Diskin, Gulledge. According to official documents, the plane entered into a spin, probably for pilot error, and crashed on fields. The B-24 was on mission, the target of the day was Munich, Germany. Alfonso Rucci, from Italy, made a historical research with Tommaso Palermo about this tragedy: by contacting eye-witnesses, american archivists and military forums, they have reconstructed all the story and organized three memorial days in Panni, Italy, for the victims, from 21st to 23rd August 2014 in the Town Major Hall. On that occasion, Rucci has shown B-24’s fragments he found at the crash site and the model of the B-24 he created. Alfonso Rucci and Tommaso Palermo are looking for relatives of victims for a contact and information exchanges. They are able to give informations about the crash (historical documents, data sheets, photos of plane and crash site) and they have intention of erecting a memorial monument on the crash site. Please, if you can help them you can write to [email protected]
