A native of Asheville, he was the son of the late William McKinley Cole and Eva Miller Cole and was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Calabrese.
Joe was a graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School and an Army veteran. He was a self employed carpenter and had helped build many fine homes in the Asheville area.
Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret Payne Cole; son, Barry Cole of Troutman, NC; daughter, Cameron Cole Stepp and her husband, Darrin, and their two children, Slayde and Paisley of Fletcher. Also surviving are four sisters, Betty Sorrells, Monica Smith, Gloria Blankenship and Obera Currin and five brothers, Herbert, Dale, Mack, Gene and David Cole.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard.
