Actor. He was born in Strathroy (Ontario, Canada) and died in Berwick-upon-Tweed (Northumberland, England). He began his career on stage, but soon he moved to cinema, where is best remembered in the film Wilson (1944), in the title role, who earned him an Oscar nomination to best actor. He was blacklisted with her wife the actress Dorris Nolan and moved to England until the rest of his life. He also worked in The Ringer (1928), The Sea Wolf (1941), Europa'51 (1951), Hidden Fear (1957), The Vikings (1958), The Wreck of Mary Deare (1959), Oscar Wilde (1960), The Damned (1963), Modesty Blaise (1966), Khartoum (1966), You Only Live Twice (1967), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and Gorky Park (1983). He also appeared in TV series Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. According newspapers and books about him, he was cremated.
