Alvin Burgess Carmichael was the son of Francis Marion Carmichael (1862-1931) and Mary Arelia Oliphant (1867-1958) who lived much of their lives in Greene County, Indiana.

On 21 Jul 1909, Greene County, Indiana, he married Grace Lillian Quillen. They had three children:
• Alvin Burgess Carmichael (1910-1978) FindAGrave 23256543 • Geneva Carmichael (1913-1917) FindAGrave 11870536 • Vera Alice (Carmichael) Hough (1917-1994) Alvin worked as a street car conductor in Indianapolis and also worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and was based out of the Palestine, Illinois, railroad office.

Some time after the death of his first wife, Grace (Quillen) Carmichael, Alvin married Celeste 'Lestie' (Biggs) Garrard, the widow of Charles Arthur Garrard (1894-1936) who lived in Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois. They had no children. Alvin is buried in the Palestine Cemetery on the plot of Lestie's family with her and her first spouse, Charles Garrard.
